A Bicycle For The Mind
Before the WWDC keynote I had read rumours that iPad multitasking was, yet again, going to be changed. Those of us that love the iPad as a platform have been burned by this promise before. However it’s not a feature I would use that often anyway.
Years ago I worked for Apple. I was a Manager at two different retail stores. I started back when the current iPhone was the 3GS and the iPad hadn’t been released yet. I’d never owned an iPad and I had no desire to until the iPad Pro was released in 2015. I’ve owned a 12.9 inch iPad Pro ever since.
What drew me (😉) to the iPad Pro? It scratched an itch that the Mac never could. I have ADHD, and growing up in the 80’s and 90’s meant that it was never diagnosed. I had a very difficult time concentrating in class and would often get in trouble for doodling. I was, and still am, easily distracted. The iPad as a computing platform does two things that really help me stay focused.
- Running apps one at a time: Yes the iPad supports multiple windows but I prefer full screen, like when I’m writing this post. It means fewer distractions and helps me to stay on task.
- Apple Pencil: I mentioned doodling in class. I’ve always loved to draw and as I moved into adulthood I realized it’s the best way for me to take notes and retain information. People call them Sketchnotes now but it’s simply doodling with a purpose.
I’m still excited to install the first public beta next month to and give the new multitasking a shot but for me the iPad is already the perfect productivity device.
